Ashbrooke School pupils celebrate Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday

15 MAY 2026

Pupils from Ashbrooke School in Sunderland celebrated Sir David Attenborough’s 100th birthday with a week of activities focusing on environmental awareness.

Across the school, pupils took part in themed learning activities exploring his life, work and global contribution to wildlife conservation and natural history.

A highlight of the week was a visit from Crazy Creatures, who brought a variety of animals into school for pupils to meet. The session included getting up close and personal with snakes, tarantulas, lizards, tortoises and rabbits.

Creativity was also at the heart of the celebrations, with pupils baking 150 blue and green cupcakes, designed to represent a Planet Earth birthday cake.

Pupils have also been working on outdoor learning projects, including planting an Earth Day tree and building animal houses for the school’s Forest School. In response to pupil voice, the school is also introducing trail cameras and nesting boxes with built-in cameras to help monitor and learn more about local wildlife.

The week of celebrations concluded with pupils and the team making donations in support of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), helping to contribute to global conservation efforts.

Nicola Wilson, Teacher commented:

“The celebrations have been  a fantastic success, bringing together learning, creativity and community spirit, while inspiring pupils to reflect on how they can help protect the planet for the future. We have thoroughly enjoyed the week and it has encouraged pupils to think more about their connection to the natural world and how we can all play a part in protecting it.”
