Westmorland School

Opening winter 2024

We are expanding our Ofsted 'Outstanding' Westmorland School to now cater for pupils aged 11- 16 years old. Our new secondary offer is for young people in need of a therapeutic learning environment and alternative approach to secondary education.

Nurturing excellence

This secondary provision, based at Wood Campus, will be structured to meet the needs of the growing number of young people who require a more therapeutic pathway for their secondary education.

The school will provide specialist support to children with autism, speech, language & communication needs, social communication needs, or heightened anxieties, who often require less formal learning environments. The educational journeys for each individual will be tailored to incorporate extensive therapeutic support and will have an emphasis on the enhancement of their life skills and personal growth as they achieve awards recognising milestones and qualifications, including BTECs, GCSEs and a range of other qualifications, ready for life beyond Westmorland.

Our Learning Environment

Westmorland Secondary will make use of extensive outdoor spaces, including woodland zones and dedicated therapy spaces; pupils will have the opportunity to connect with nature whilst practising essential life skills.

We have developed:

  • Outdoor Therapy Areas: Specially designed spaces for therapeutic activities
  • Animal Therapy and Horticulture: Hands-on learning with animals and gardening
  • Forest School: Immersive experiences in our on-site woodland
  • Skill-focused learning spaces: Comfortable, low-stimulus environments
  • Futures: Onsite vocational activities and opportunities within the local community

Skill-focused learning spaces

The learning activities will be skill-focused in adaptable multipurpose spaces. This will continue at Key Stage 4 (KS4), where pupils will have a designated 'base' organised according to their needs rather than age and stage. Bases will serve as comfortable study areas in a low-stimulus, comfortable and inspirational environments.

Futures

To prepare our pupils for the next stages of their journey, careful planning for their future will start through our Futures programme, designed to deliver opportunities for every young person.

The Futures Team will provide onsite vocational activities and opportunities within the local community, where planned sessions will help build confidence and develop a pathway for their next steps.

Our therapeutic offer

We believe that unless a young person is able to feel emotionally secure, they are less likely to fulfil their personal, social and educational potential. Our unique approach to supporting young people enables them to go on to realise a future filled with aspiration and achievement.

Our children and young people have access to an unrivalled therapeutic offer that encompasses exceptional expertise, a high ratio of qualified therapists and clinicians to young people, and a diverse range of available therapies. They have the support of our in-house Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Therapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and other specialist professionals as required.
