Thomas, a former pupil of Oversands School, is now studying Engineering Science at Pembroke College, Oxford University. His family recently shared their immense pride in everything he has overcome to reach this point. The journey was far from easy, but with the dedication of the team from our Oversands School and unwavering support at home, he has achieved extraordinary success, far more than anyone could have imagined at the beginning.
The beginning
Thomas faced challenges at his mainstream school, and after a lengthy process, he was diagnosed with autism. He struggled to engage with learning, express himself, and connect with others, leaving both him and his family searching for an environment where he would have the chance to succeed. Daily frustrations took a toll on his confidence, and it became clear that he needed a setting that understood his needs and recognised his potential.
A Fresh Start at Oversands School
Thomas joined Oversands School in Year 5, and from the very beginning, the team worked closely with him and his family to build trust and stability. They introduced structured communication strategies and daily reflection routines that helped him to articulate his experiences and manage emotions more effectively. This structured support significantly improved his self-regulation, confidence, and classroom engagement. As he began to settle, friendships and connections formed naturally, and finally, for the first time in years, Thomas felt understood and valued, and the results wowed everyone.
Discovering science and technology
By Years 8 and 9, Thomas’s passion for science and technology was unmistakable. He was piecing together computers from spare parts, proudly showing his projects to classmates. These projects strengthened his technical skills while also helping him build meaningful connections with peers. Engineering became not only an academic interest but a powerful tool for communication and confidence.
Successful transition and exceptional achievement
By the end of Year 10, Thomas was ready to return to a mainstream setting, where he could access both GCSE and A-level courses. With careful support, he adapted confidently to larger classes while maintaining his motivation and focus, ultimately achieving four A grades at A-level.
A future full of possibilities
Thomas is studying Engineering Science at Pembroke College, Oxford University. His journey is proof the transformative power of tailored education, emotional support, and nurturing curiosity. Oversansd School’s approach enabled Thomas not only to overcome early challenges but to thrive, setting him on a path to future success.
