Harley, a former pupil of Avon Park School, recently secured an apprenticeship with Roadchef, marking a significant milestone in his journey. With the guidance of Futures and the support of dedicated professionals, he developed the confidence and skills needed to transition from a passion-driven mindset to a structured career path. His journey hasn’t always been easy, but each step has been a testament to his determination and hard work. Little did he know that this achievement would be just the beginning of even greater opportunities ahead.
The beginning
Harley joined Avon Park School in Year 6. While managing well in school, Harley required occasional support with focus but consistently demonstrated his best efforts and determination.
Over time, he began to thrive, participating actively in school life, joining the football team, contributing to the Student Council, playing a pivotal role in school governance, and he also mentored younger pupils, providing guidance and support.
Outside of the classroom, Harley was actively involved in his community, he regularly contributed to a local children's mental health group, using music as a tool to inspire others. Through rapping, storytelling, DJ mixing, and producing, he transformed his personal life story into powerful music. His passion didn’t end there, he frequently performed at open mic events and took part in local council crime awareness music videos too.
Hello Roadchef
In Year 10, Harley was introduced to Roadchef through the first-ever Futures Partnership session. The session provided valuable insights into business operations at KFC, McDonald's, Costa, and the wider hospitality sector, including career progression opportunities. His interest was sparked, and he attended a work taster day at Watford Gap Services. During the half-day workshop, he gained hands-on experience clearing dining areas and preparing drinks for customers; his enthusiasm and dedication stood out, showing a genuine interest in pursuing this career path.
At school, Harley got to work with Avon Park’s Futures Lead to build his CV, making sure to add his new skills and experiences. His parents were involved in discussions about apprenticeship options, while mock interviews and interview preparation helped him feel more confident.
Following the success of the taster day, the Futures Team got to work with Roadchef to explore apprenticeship opportunities for Harley. Meanwhile, he continued attending taster sessions, engaging with the training team and managers, which boosted his confidence. Roadchef appointed him with a mentor, offering consistent guidance and encouragement. Despite considering college as a backup option, Harley remained focused on securing an apprenticeship with Roadchef.
The start of something new
In June 2024, Harley attended an interview with Roadchef and successfully secured part-time summer work, with the opportunity to increase his hours while waiting for his apprenticeship to commence in November 2024. Although he initially struggled with early starts (4.30 AM!) and shift patterns, the ongoing support from his parents, mentor and Futures helped him adjust.
Since starting his role, Harley has settled in well, impressing his manager, with his excellent customer service skills. His growing confidence was on full display at the company Christmas party, where he performed a rap in front of 120 employees - combining his love for music with his newfound professional environment.
While music was once his sole focus, exposure to career pathways shifted his mindset. He still loves his music but now recognises the benefits of employment and career progression. His first paycheck was a proud milestone, allowing him to buy a new phone, which he eagerly showed off when collecting his exam results. His dad was equally proud, celebrating his achievement and the journey he has taken.
Harley’s story is a testament to the power of opportunity and support. With the right guidance, he has transformed his passion into confidence, his skills into a career, and his ambitions into a bright future.
