Pupils from Bescot Hall School have demonstrated exceptional leadership in promoting sustainability and environmental awareness, earning the internationally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag accreditation. This esteemed award celebrates the school’s commitment to eco-friendly initiatives, pupil-led action, and the creation of a greener, more sustainable school community.
To achieve this award, a pupil-led Eco-Committee, supported by Assistant Head Teacher, Rajveer Bual, embraced Eco-Schools' trusted seven-step framework to champion positive environmental behaviours and further their school's sustainability journey. The Eco-Committee started by reviewing their school environment and curriculum from an environmental perspective. They then worked together to create a detailed and impactful year-long action plan to drive meaningful change.
The ambitious action plan focused on three key areas: Biodiversity, School Grounds, and Water. To address these priorities, pupils led a range of hands-on initiatives, including regular litter-picking sessions, enhancing local wildlife habitats, and creating a thriving vegetable garden. They also cared for the school’s ducklings and brightened the grounds by planting colourful flowers, helping to make the environment both more sustainable and inviting.
Head Teacher, Shane Rowe, commented:
“We are incredibly proud to achieve the Eco-Schools Award with Merit. The dedication, enthusiasm, and creativity of our pupils and the team have culminated in our school being greener and sustainable. Working through the award has made our school community more aware of how we can impact the environment positively.”
He continued:
“Achieving this award is a wonderful achievement, and we are excited to build on this success, as we aim to take the Eco-Schools Award from Merit to Distinction this year.”
Through an inclusive curriculum that embeds sustainability and social responsibility, pupils are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and values to become confident, responsible global citizens who can create positive change within their communities and beyond.
