What Do Speech and Language Therapists Do at WG?

01 MAY 2025

When a child struggles to speak clearly, understand words, or express themselves, it can affect everything from learning to making friends. That’s where our speech and language therapists (SLT) come in.

These specialists work with children from infancy through adolescence, helping them develop the communication skills they need to grow, connect, and thrive. Many of our SLT’s get to witness our students full journey throughout school, getting to see them most days which enables strong relationships to form.

Supporting Speech and Language Development

Paediatric SLTs help children who have difficulties with:

  • Speech sounds - such as trouble pronouncing words or being hard to understand
  • Language - struggling to understand others or express ideas clearly
  • Stammering - disruptions in the flow of speech like repetition or blocks
  • Voice - issues with pitch, volume, or hoarseness
  • Social communication - challenges with understanding social rules like turn-taking or making eye contact

Young people may need speech therapy for a variety of reasons, including developmental delays, autism, hearing impairments, cleft palate, or neurological conditions like cerebral palsy.

Working in Homes and Schools

Our paediatric SLTs work directly in our homes and schools. They often collaborate with parents, teachers, occupational therapists, and other professionals to ensure our young people receive well-rounded support in all areas of their life.

Empowering Children and Families

Therapy is not just about structured sessions, it’s about empowering families with the strategies and tools they need every day. Paediatric SLTs guide parents and carers on how to support communication at home through play, routines, and everyday interactions.

Making Communication a Joy

Whether it’s supporting a school-aged child to build confidence in class, or introducing alternative ways to communicate, paediatric SLTs play a life-changing role. They help children find their voice, in whatever form that may take and use it with confidence and joy.
