Robert - Pastoral Care Assistant - Westmorland School

01 JUNE 2025

Robert is a Pastoral Care Assistant based at Westmorland School. Learn why Robert pursued a career in the pastoral team and why working with young people with SEN is so rewarding.

What inspired you to get into your pastoral role?

I had lots of personal struggles as a child growing up. I had undiagnosed ADHD until I was 27 and I can see the struggles that some of these young people face. It feels really good to give back and give the help and support the young people need which I didn’t get.

What do you love most about working for WG?

The people, we have a really good team who are all person-centred people, everyone has the same aim and mission. We all pull together to get everything done and it’s really supportive.

How has working with WG enhanced your skills and professional growth?

Massively, I came from a mainstream school so learning all the new aspects which come with special education, such as learning the clinical side, the PBS approach and how to work with these young people with their specific needs – I’ve learnt so much during my time here.

What do you find most rewarding about working with children and young people in your role?

I think it’s seeing them day in and day out and the differences you see. From the minute they come in, to three months down the line, seeing them grow and develop is the best thing and it’s really rewarding.

Can you tell me about a huge small victory you’ve had?

I came here originally as a teaching assistant so one of mine would be progressing into the pastoral role. I felt like I wanted to be that person that when there was a crisis, I could implement the appropriate support. I’ve been in this role for 8 months now and I love it!

What advice would you give to someone thinking of starting in a pastoral role?

Get into it, no two days are the same, it’s a bit of a rollercoaster, but it’s great!
