01 OCTOBER 2025
In celebration of ADHD Awareness Month, Colette Longden, National Training Director from Blueprint Learning, delivers a webinar exploring what ADHD is and the impact on children and young people.
What Is ADHD?
In this webinar, Colette shares practical advice and strategies support your child with ADHD. She explores what ADHD is and what it isn't, executive functioning, emotional regulation and sensory processing challenges. Plus, the impact sleep and diet can have on your neurodivergent child.
Your Instagram questions answered
Demand avoidance in ADHD often stems from executive function difficulties, anxiety, or feeling overwhelmed rather than deliberate defiance. Explain to others that it's like asking someone to read without their glasses. The brain's "get started" system needs support. Just like some people need glasses to read, so try collaboration, choices, reduced pressure, and breaking tasks into smaller steps.
ADHD brains often have delayed circadian rhythms and difficulty "switching off," so establish consistent sleep routines, consider melatonin (consult doctor first), reduce screen time before bed, and ensure adequate daytime exercise. Work collaboratively with your child to set agreed boundaries rather than imposing rules, like using apps that gradually dim screens or setting device charging stations outside bedrooms. Address the underlying needs devices meet (stimulation, social connection, anxiety management) and problem-solve alternatives together, as teens respond better to partnership than control.
Girls often show ADHD symptoms around ages 8-12 when academic and organisational demands increase, though symptoms were likely present earlier but masked by effort or accommodation. Inattentive presentation in girls is frequently missed because they're not disruptive and may compensate through anxiety, perfectionism, or sheer effort until demands exceed their capacity.
