The Link Between ADHD & Anxiety

15 OCTOBER 2025

Anne-Marie Harrison, Education Director at Ideas Afresh, shares top tips and practical strategies to help support, navigate and manage your ADHD child's anxiety.

The Link Between ADHD & Anxiety

In this webinar Anne-Marie explores why ADHD is often associated with raised anxiety levels and why a child or young person with ADHD may have a particularly intense response or reaction, to what may be perceived as every day events; examining the detail of social, sensory and systemic stress triggers. She also shares real life shared experiences and how we can engage in reducing anxiety to help our children feel confident, comfortable and secure.

Your Instagram questions answered

Trauma can influence ADHD but isn’t the sole cause. Anxiety in ADHD often arises from overthinking, rejection sensitivity, and executive functioning challenges.

It's important not to get tied up in labels, and to focus on the reaction and response which will indicate the trigger.

Being selective and making choices. Talking to our children about the importance of being selective and protecting themselves from getting exhausted is a good way of managing a burnout.

Make it as familiar as you can. So, give them a little bag that's got a smell that they can spray so that that's familiar. Even maybe taking toilet paper from home, so that's familiar.
