It’s important to remember that learning is part of everyday life, it’s not just about sitting down and learning in school. The classroom is somewhere you can learn new things, but just as much happens at home. In this article, Maggie Allred, Key Stage 2 Teacher at our Cumberland School, who has 25 years teaching experience, shares four ways to make learning present beyond the classroom.
Put everyday skills into practice at home
It's important to connect the skills that your child learns in the classroom with everyday activities. For example, during breakfast, look at the cereal packet and ask your child ‘what does the cereal weigh?’ A simple activity like this is practicing math skills. Later, perhaps when you’re baking or following a recipe, show them the recipe and explain how the different quantities and techniques are similar to conducting a science experiment.
Encourage your child to do tasks independently
As parents, it’s natural to want to help by stepping in when your child is working on tasks. However, the best way to support their growth is to encourage independence. Let them tackle those math and science challenges on their own, and celebrate their efforts with plenty of praise once they succeed.
Take every opportunity to read and understand text
Everyone develops their own unique way of engaging with text, and building comfort with looking at and exploring written words can be a valuable life skill. Whenever you’re reading together, even if it’s just a single word, highlight it and invite your child to explore the information alongside you in a way that feels natural and supportive for them.
Do physical activities together
Engaging in physical activity has a profound impact on children’s mental well-being. Whether it’s a swim at the swimming baths or a leisurely walk around the park, these activities are not only beneficial for physical health but also play a key role in emotional and psychological development. Regular movement helps reduce anxiety, enhances mood, and improves overall resilience.
