Behind the Scenes: What Does a Special Education Teacher Really Do?
When most people think of teachers, they picture someone standing at the front of a classroom, giving a lesson to a group of eager students. But for special education teachers, the role is far more complex, personalised, and, in many ways, even more impactful. These educators wear many hats throughout the day — they are instructors, advocates, mentors, and problem-solvers. So, what exactly are the day-to-day duties of a special education teacher at Witherslack Group?
Creating Individualised Education Plans (IEPs)
One of the most important responsibilities is developing and implementing Individualised Education Plans for each student. These legally binding documents outline a student’s unique learning needs, goals, accommodations, and services. Special education teachers work closely with families, therapists, and other educators to create and update these plans regularly.
Providing Specialised Instruction
Special education teachers tailor their teaching strategies to meet students where they are. This may involve one-on-one instruction, small group teaching, or integrating assistive technology. Lessons are designed to match students’ abilities while helping them make meaningful academic progress.
Monitoring and Assessing Progress
Constant assessment is a key part of the role. Teachers track how students are progressing toward their IEP goals, adjust instruction as needed, and keep detailed records. They may use formal tests, classroom observations, or progress charts to measure growth. Here at WG, progress isn’t just academic, but personal. We celebrate all our huge small victories which could simply be a student who struggles with attendance, sitting through a full lesson.
Supporting Social and Emotional Development
Beyond academics, special education teachers help students build confidence, social skills, and emotional regulation. They create structured, supportive environments that promote independence and help students navigate their daily challenges.
Collaborating with a Team
No special education teacher works alone at Witherslack Group. They regularly work closely with their teaching assistants, pastoral team, speech and occupational therapists, school psychologists, and parents to ensure consistency and support across all areas of a student’s life. This teamwork is essential to a student’s success.
Advocating for Students
Special education teachers often serve as advocates, ensuring students receive the services, accommodations, and respect they deserve. This may include attending meetings, communicating with school administrators, or guiding parents through the special education process.
In short, the duties of a special education teacher go far beyond teaching. They nurture, adapt, support, and empower students every single day. Their work may be challenging, but it’s also filled with small victories that have a lasting impact on students and families alike.
