Westmorland School – Therapeutic Services
Therapeutic Input
At Westmorland School we are committed to developing our
pupils self esteem, improve social skills and develop positive behaviours as well as encouraging pupils to achieve their potential. We recognise that social and emotional skills are essential for those who work and learn in schools.
Underpinning our curriculum is the “SEAL” programme, which helps pupils to develop their skills of making positive relationships with others; understanding and managing themselves and their own thoughts, emotions and behaviours; as well as understanding and responding to the emotions and behaviour of others.
“The school follows the Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) programme which contributes greatly towards pupils’ outstanding personal development.” Ofsted
Therapeutic Team
We have the support of two Educational Psychologists, a Psychotherapist, Speech and Language Therapist and we are currently offering Art Psychotherapy. We have a dedicated therapy room.
“The school has excellent working relationships with a wide variety of other agencies, including an educational psychologist, psychotherapist and speech and language therapist to ensure that the specific needs of pupils are met.” Ofsted
Educational Psychologists
One of our Educational Psychologists assesses pupils upon entry to the school and provides a detailed report for the post admission review, which helps inform the individual programmes for the pupil.
Our other Educational Psychologist observes pupils in class and works alongside other professionals to provide programmes to support individual pupils. Educational Psychologists may make home visits and /or visit pupils in their current educational setting.
Speech and Language Therapy
Our Speech and Language Therapist assesses pupils upon entry to the school. They provide a detailed report and deliver programmes for pupils with Speech and Language difficulties and advise staff on strategies for supporting pupils who experience difficulties with speech, language and communication. This in turn supports the pupils' ability to access the curriculum.
Psychotherapist
Our Psychotherapist works with individual pupils, using a person centred approach which is non judgemental and helps pupils develop their ability to form positive and trusting relationships and deal appropriately with their thoughts and feelings , including anger management strategies.
At present we are able to offer Art Psychotherapy, which enable individual pupils to express their feelings through the medium of Art.
We are committed to children reaching their full potential and see the work of our therapists as vital if children are to make progress and have better life chances.
'Westmorland School seeks to ‘develop the child’s self-esteem, improve social skills and develop positive behaviours’, as well as ‘encourage pupils to achieve their
potential’. Ofsted
