Westmorland Passes Inspection With Flying Colours
Westmorland School in Chorley has achieved an excellent grading by Ofsted inspectors. Westmorland School is a primary day school for up to 32 boys and girls with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties with associated learning needs. It is one of eight schools and four children’s homes run by The Witherslack Group, which offers education and residential care to children with special education needs. Ofsted graded the school ‘outstanding’ in how well the curriculum and other activities meet the range of needs and interests of pupils; the quality of provision for pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and the overall welfare, health and safety of pupils. Westmorland also fulfilled 100% of Ofsted’s overall regulations, a 10% increase from the school’s last grading three years ago. Sue Asher, headteacher at Westmorland School, said: “It is the dedication and commitment of my staff that has enabled us to achieve these fantastic results’. “Our children are very proud of their school and thoroughly enjoy lessons which has been acknowledged in the report.” Geoff Brady, director at The Witherslack Group, said: “This is another excellent report for one of The Witherslack Group schools. “It is well deserved and a credit to the staff and pupils who all contribute to the school’s success. Media Week
The aim of our media week was for each class group to promote their own class to an audience using a variety of media; Mono-printing; The week began in great style with a professional artist teaching each class about mono-printing. Heather Profit from the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS) secured funding and sourced our artist (Anne Bridges) for this project. Every child had the opportunity to make a number of prints to promote their class. These are now creating a colourful display in the assembly hall. All classes really benefitted from this opportunity and it was very enjoyable too! A very big thank you to NADFAS. Photography; On the Tuesday of media week each class was taught how to get the best photographs by James Hardy (photographer). Each class took their own promotional photographs as well as having a whole class picture taken. Each class put their own individual slant on their pictures, the larger prints will be on display at school in the hall. James Hardy also came to be staff’s very own paparazzi for our Oscars awards on Friday. Sing-up; Tigers had worked with Sue Guenalt, previously at St.Gregorys’ School, Sue was kind enough to agree to complete raps with each class which they used to help their class promotions. Watch out any record contractors we have some serious talent here! Oscars awards; The staff all dressed for the occasion for our very own ‘Oscars’ style lunch. Staff and pupils all nominated staff for awards such as; Best Dressed (red carpet style), Best film character, Most creative outfit and Most entertaining. The winning staff gave ‘Oscar’ style speeches as they received their ‘Oscar’ award (plastic I’m afraid) and their winning sash. A huge thanks to all the Birchall family and Vicky Bentley for making a wonderful lunch and turning our hall into a dining area fit for any actors or actresses. Presentation afternoon; The ‘Oscars’ lunch was also attended by St.Gregorys’ year five and six school council who were our judging panel for the afternoons presentations. Each class completed a presentation promoting their own class using a variety of media. The Wish FM team joined them in the afternoon to make up the final panel. We had Simon Green (Director), Kev Seed (Presenter) and Claire Hannah (News Reader). St.Gregorys’ school and the Wish FM team scored their performance and grilled them about their presentations. Each class had to take a fair amount of criticism from our very strict panel but they rose to the challenge. Well done to all classes for each showing off your classes so positively and using all the different media skills you had been taught throughout the week. Our winning team was Panthers class! |
