Westmorland School is a primary school for up to 32 boys and girls with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties and associated learning needs. We aim to equip children with the skills to succeed, building their self-esteem and confidence. We help children to learn more effectively by using a variety of teaching and learning styles and promoting independent learning.

"I feel my son has improved in all aspects since starting at Westmorland; emotionally, psychologically and educationally. I now have back the child I knew at age 5, who was happy, lively, inquisitive, confident and alive. I can't thank you enough for bringing this back when I thought it was gone forever".

Westmorland School - special education for pupils aged 5-11

Aims

At Westmorland School every child matters. We provide personalised learning programmes for pupils to ensure that individual needs are met. Pupils have Individual Care and Education Plans, which set targets to address areas for development. There is one to one withdrawal for pupils experiencing difficulties in reading and/or spelling.

"Each child has an individual care and education plan which is used well to identify and set targets for pupils. Pupils ‘wear’ these targets on a badge and are fully involved in setting them, which makes them more relevant and achievable". Ofsted

We have a four-year rolling curriculum programme, which is topic based and taught within subject areas, enabling cross curricular links to be made.

The review of the National Curriculum states that “Subjects will be complemented by worthwhile and challenging cross-curricular studies that provide ample opportunities for children to use and apply their subject knowledge and skills to deepen understanding.”  We provide specialist teaching for Drama, Music and Religious Education.

"The curriculum is outstanding, takes account of the National Curriculum and provides personalised programmes for individual pupils to enable them to make good academic progress" was what Ofsted said in October 2008. And we agree!

Curriculum

We provide a broad and balanced curriculum with opportunities for enrichment activities through lunchtime clubs, which include badminton, craft club, gardening club, visits and field trips, offsite activities such as trampolining and swimming lessons and themed days or weeks, such as 'Circus Skills'. We take account of the National Curriculum and put an emphasis on children developing basic skills in Literacy and Numeracy with cross curricular links across subjects.

"Every effort is made to plan activities which use skills learned in some subjects in other areas of the curriculum, for example, pupils use their mathematical and information and communication technology skills in science.” Ofsted

Underpinning our curriculum is the SEAL programme (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning), which helps us to ensure that our pupils receive the support they need to reach their potential.

Ofsted stated that

"Pupils say they enjoy coming to school,” and "display very positive attitudes to their work.” At Westmorland School our pupils do enjoy and achieve. (ECM)

The majority of our Year 6 pupils take the SATS tests and achieve results which are comparable with mainstream schools.
