Pontville School – Therapeutic Services
The Therapeutic Services are fundamental to the operation of the whole school and provide the focus for many of the programmes on which educational attainment is achieved. The whole staff body form part of the therapeutic team in the delivery of all aspects of teaching, learning, care and support. However the school has a wealth of specialists who help ensure focus is maintained on the individual needs and requirements of the young people.

Speech Therapy
The school has four full time speech and language therapists and a speech therapy assistant who work with pupils within the classroom, individually and in the community. They work in the day and residential settings ensuring that all aspects of learning are supported.
Group based therapy looks at establishing and developing a core hierarchy of social skills as the young person develops and moves through the school.
Individual therapy seeks to support and help young people with a specific aspect of communication difficulty. Generalisation therapy supports young people in taking these acquired skills and transferring them into everyday life and practical application in the local community.
The Speech and Language Therapy department give training to all staff, which is accredited through Edge Hill University, so that they operate at specialised skill level for planning and delivering curriculum content. Training is also given to outside agencies on request to support those working alongside our young people (e.g.: taxi escorts).
"On entry to school, rigorous cognitive and language tests ensure that each pupil’s baseline of attainment is identified and this is well used to set pupils according to their needs." Ofsted
Educational Psychology
The school has an on site educational psychologist who supports the assessment and monitoring of pupil achievement and development alongside specific programmes associated with emotional and behavioural needs that often become apparent from the frustrations encountered by young people as they grow.
Counselling and Relaxation Therapy
These programmes are offered to individuals who are having a brief period of difficulty and require a more intensive 1:1 input to deal with personal needs which are causing them difficulty, or anxiety. These programmes are developed and delivered by a qualified counsellor and trained school staff.
