Cumberland School is a day school for girls and boys aged 11-16 who have behavioural, emotional, social and associated learning difficulties, which can hinder their academic progress. The school aims to provide a quality secondary curriculum to young people who need a more specialised environment in order to meet their potential academic and social development.

Cumberland School - special education for pupils aged 11-16

Through the BEST curriculum, young people with emotional and social problems receive regular one-to-one support from experienced pastoral staff.

Cumberland School aims to:

  • provide opportunities for pupils to learn and achieve.
  • promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
  • prepare young people to progress to their next stage of development, be it education, employment or training, with enthusiasm, motivation and optimism for the future.
  • encourage the development of independent young people equipped with the skills and qualities to make a positive contribution to society.

Curriculum

All pupils at Cumberland School have access to the National Curriculum, vocational courses, ASDAN and opportunities to participate in a range of outdoor pursuit/activities.

The school offers a full range of National Curriculum subjects and also has specialist facilities and teachers for Design and Technology, Art and Design, Physical Education, Music and Outdoor Pursuits.

Learning Support

Pupils are assessed on entry to the school and an Individual Care and Education Plan (ICEP) is drawn up.
Pupils are also assessed using National Curriculum levels, B-Squared, diagnostic tests by our Educational Psychologist for literacy and numeracy and by their subject teachers.

All subjects are taught by subject specialists who are supported by classroom assistants.

Pupils with specific difficulties and those with delayed literacy and numeracy benefit from individual tuition and support.  All pupils are taught in small class groups and together with a high staff:pupil ratio, ensures their educational progress and personal developments.
