Chilworth House School - Therapeutic Services

When a pupil first arrives in the school we assist them to settle into the routines and help the pupil to become ready to access the curriculum in order that they are able and willing to make maximum use of the learning opportunities available in the school.
On entry to the school a series of baseline tests are administered to pupils: Salford Sentence Reading Test, Schonell Spelling Test, GOAL on-line assessments for English, Maths and Life Skills and a Read Write Inc. assessment. Pupils are also seen by our Speech and Language Therapist, who carries out a comprehensive assessment. The results of these initial assessments help staff formulate an Individual Care and Education Plan and inform teachers’ planning. Additional support can then be planned for as required.
Other assessments are carried out on individual basis e.g. additional assessments by the school’s Education Psychologist or other professionals as required.
Core Values
Our curriculum model is built upon a series of 5 core values: Love, Truth, Peace, Right Conduct & Non Violence. These values are interwoven into a structured framework that aims to develop pupils’ social, emotional and behavioural skills across the curriculum through activities based upon the five social and emotional aspects of learning: self-awareness, managing feelings, motivation, empathy and social skills. We have also incorporated Health Education, Citizenship, Drug Education and Sex Education into this framework. We refer to this as our Swallow Curriculum. Much time is given to our pupils in encouraging them to talk to staff about their emotions and issues that are concerning them, in order that they are able to take responsibility for managing their behaviour.
All pupils take part in a social skills programme.
Classroom Support
Chilworth House School has a team of Teaching Assistants who support pupils in the classroom environment. Occasionally pupils may receive 1:1 support in class throughout the day in order to access the lesson content. Our team of Teaching Assistants provide additional support for pupils as required through a series of small group support sessions e.g. literacy, numeracy, fine motor skills, handwriting, delivering individual programmes as advised by therapists.
Speech & Language Therapist
Chilworth House School aims to integrate speech and language therapy into the classroom. Communication is fundamental to learning and therefore collaboration with the teaching staff is essential to ensure communication is functional within the learning environment. Individual programmes are written for pupils by the Speech and Language Therapist using activities that will engage, motivate and focus the children's attention. The Speech and Language Therapist works collaboratively with the teachers in each class to progress the young person's communication skills.
"I am happy with my son attending Chilworth, he is a different child since starting here, much happier, and as regained his confidence." Parent
