Chilworth House School is a co-educational day special school, catering for Key Stage 1, 2 and 3 pupils. Situated in a rural environment on the outskirts of Oxford. Pupils will primarily have complex educational needs, communication difficulties & challenging behaviours. We have taken ownership of our curriculum, with the cross-curricular model built upon a series of core values.

"Both my husband and I love the school, it has a wonderful warmth to it as soon as you walk through the door. We just knew that our son would achieve so much there and for the first time we felt the fog lifting".

Chilworth House School – special education for pupils aged 5-13

At Chilworth House School we are committed to providing a happy, welcoming and motivating learning environment where the whole school enjoy their learning experiences and are encouraged to achieve their potential.

As part of the Witherslack Group of Schools our philosophy is based on the ‘Resilience Theory’.

Aims

In partnership with parents/carers and Local Education Authorities we aim:

  • To strive for the highest quality of education and care through which, every child will achieve their full potential academically, socially and emotionally.
  • To provide a happy, positive, secure and caring environment where children are valued equally and can develop their confidence and self-esteem, independence, self discipline and respect and concern for others.
  • To offer a broad, balanced and stimulating curriculum, that meets the individual needs of each child.
  • To develop positive links between home, school and the wider community in order to support children’s learning, during and after their time at Chilworth House School
  • To promote the development of all staff, enabling them to work together as a team, sharing expertise and valuing each other’s strengths.

Curriculum

As a school we have put in place a curriculum model which offers pupils’ a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum that has ‘values education’ and the development of social and emotional skills at its core.  This is represented by our school emblem, the SWALLOW:-

        S timulating and innovative
        W elcoming and respectful
        A chievable – boosting self-esteem
L earning in a positive and happy environment
        L ooked-after and cared for
O pportunities to develop socially, emotionally and academically
W hole-school where everyone is important

At Chilworth House School we have taken ownership of our values based cross curricular approach described by Ofsted as ‘highly relevant' and ‘stimulates pupils imagination’.

Our curriculum model is built upon a series of core values such as honesty, respect, happiness, responsibility, tolerance and peace. These values are interwoven into a structured framework that aims to develop pupils’ social, emotional, and behavioural skills across the curriculum through activities based upon the five social and emotional aspects of learning. We refer to this as our Swallow Curriculum.

Our curriculum aims to be relevant, improve self-esteem, motivation and achievement, develop skills for adult life and engage pupils in their learning. This is achieved through cross-curricular learning which helps pupils to make links across the subjects.
