“My son is coming up to his sixth year at Cedar House and words cannot describe the way I feel on how far he has come and the excellent support of all members of staff. You all deserve medals. You've turned my lad around 100%".

Cedar House School Pupil Information

Pupils’ FAQs

Who will look after me?

In the school there is a team of staff who will make sure that you are safe and well.  The Headteacher of the school makes sure that you are looked after properly.  In your class there will be a teacher and, usually, there will be a teaching assistant, both of whom will spend time with you making sure that you are happy and that you are listened to.  Another group of staff called care staff will look after you in the evenings and during the weekends that you stay in school.  You will have a Keyworker who you will spend time with on a regular basis; they will help you if you have any difficulties.

What do I do if I don’t feel well?

Tell any of the staff and they will try their best to make sure you feel comfortable.  If they cannot help they will ask somebody else to help.  This person might be a nurse, a doctor or a dentist.

What if something happens that I am not happy with?

Within the school it is OK to make a complaint if you are not happy with something and the staff will try their best to make things better for you.  You can request to see a more senior member of staff in the school that you can talk to and you can make a complaint which will be written down in a book.  Your complaint will then be dealt with and you will be informed of the outcome.  When you move into the school your Keyworker will spend time with you explaining what to do if you are not happy.

How do I get to school?

If you are a residential pupil, a taxi will collect you from your home and bring you to school and will return you home for your weekend leaves and school holidays.  There will usually be a driver and an escort in the vehicle with you.  If you are a day pupil you may be brought to school in a taxi or you might be collected by a school minibus.

RESIDENTIAL PUPILS:

Can I keep in touch with my family?

If you are usually allowed to be in touch with family members we would like this to carry on.  Just because you have moved into a new school it does not mean that things that you usually do with your family have to change.  There will be a telephone on your residential house and there will be times that you are allowed to use it to telephone your family.  They will be able to telephone you on your residential house in the evening between activities and supper time.  You are also allowed to have a mobile phone of your own at certain times as long as it is not a camera phone. All pupils also have their own email account in school.

What do I do if I am upset in the night?

There are always staff on the residential house who will help you.  During the night one member of staff stays awake while others are asleep.

Can I bring my games console?

You can do so and staff will talk with you about keeping it safe and how to use it within the school’s guidelines.

Can I put photos on my bedroom walls?

Yes you can.  We like you to be able to personalise your room by bringing pictures and books.

Will the things in my room be safe?

Your room will be locked when you are not in it.  You might prefer to give valuable items to staff for safe keeping.  All pupils also have their own locker which they can lock themselves.

Do I get pocket money?

Yes.  The amount you get will depend on your age and the grade you have achieved.

When I’m not in school what do I do?

There are always a range of activities on offer in the evenings and at the weekends.  These include trips, games and sports.
