Helvellyn Conquered - Duke of Edinburgh Practice Expedition

Three intrepid explorers from Cedar House School set out to conquer the dizzy heights of Helvellyn in the Lake District. Carrying everything they needed for an overnight expedition they managed to navigate themselves to a suitable campsite.

After striking camp they then began the long arduous ascent via Red Tarn to Helvellyn. After a heart thumping scramble up Swirral Edge everyone got to the top to whoops of joy and a delicious mug of steaming hot chocolate brewed on the summit.

The three explorers then successfully descended to camp and spent a very enjoyable evening cooking, talking, playing games and roasting marshmallows around the fire. All of us returned safely the next day, tired, but in high spirits, mission accomplished.

This marks an important part of the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, which was started at Cedar House School for the first time in January 2008. The Award has been trailed as a “rite of passage” that may help empower some young people at Cedar House to make the difficult transition from adolescence to adulthood.
